About once a week I have my car washed at a place near the studio and gradually I got acquainted with a girl who worked in the office. She had just moved, to L.A. from New Mexico, and she was the cutest, sweetest girl I've ever met! I kept asking her for a date, and one day she finally agreed. I started to explain that I'd have to pick her up late by saying, 'I'm an actor, you see...' Her face showed immediate understanding. 'It's okay if you're not working,' she said. 'We can go dutch if you want to go to a movie.' She didn't even know who Ben Murphy-actor was, she just liked me. Groovy!
